Hello

I’M LORIEN WHITTEN, LCPC

They/Them

Life brings us a constant stream of transitions. It is often helpful to have support navigating these changes with grace. I would like to be a part of your journey and facilitate movement through these times with perspective, insight and self-awareness.

I use a variety of modalities in my practice, applying them thoughtfully depending on your individual needs. I am client-centered at heart and believe that we all have the answers we need within us. My role is to help you uncover your inner wisdom.

I embrace who you are and where you are in your life today. Much of my experience over the years has been working with LGBTQIA+ people in various stages of coming out to others and moving into themselves. My goal is to help you become connected with your authentic self. I look forward to supporting you on your path.

 MY APPROACH

More on how I support people with various specialties.
  • My primary focus is supporting those who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community. Within this community, many of my clients are on a gender journey. I support each person to more deeply connect with themselves. If a client is interested, I will help them get resourced with hormone replacement therapy, as well as write letters of support for gender-affirming surgeries.

Other specialties include supporting people with some of the following:

    Anxiety

    Codependency

    Confidence/Self-Esteem

    Depression

    Grief

    Relationship Issues

    Sexual Abuse

    Spirituality and Spiritual Practices.

More about the communities I have experience serving.
  • Identifying as part of the queer community, I look to support those who also identify as LGBTQIA+. I also have experience working with people who identify as being in communities such as the following:

    Ethical Non-monogamous Relationships

    Kink

    Heterosexual

    Gender Expansive/Fluid

Modalities offered in my sessions.
  • I have found connection and trust between me and my client to be the most important “modality.” I strive to remain authentic, genuine, and approachable.

Models of therapy I tend to weave into sessions are the following:

    Internal Family Systems (IFS)

    Person Centered

    Mindfulness

    Strengths Based

    Eco-Psychology

    Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

I knew from an early age that I wanted to be a therapist, but I also knew that I didn’t want to do a traditional program. Connection with myself through nature and spirituality led me to Southwestern College in New Mexico, where I received my Masters in 2010. I uncovered aspects of myself through teachings from indigenous people, nature, ceremonies, and desert fasts.

Their motto at the time was “Raising consciousness through counseling.” This informs my practice, as I like to support people to more deeply connect to their authentic self.

I received my therapy license in Maine in 2011. After working as an out-patient therapist in a public school, I started my private practice in 2014.

I often draw upon my experiences working with adjudicated youth in a wilderness setting, direct service with teens in a group home environment, and providing sexual violence prevention, education, and support.
